BEATING BIRMINGHAM HEAT

Sep 01 2023

Heat reduction window film from The Window Film Company is a cost-efficient and effective way of reducing excess heat while also cutting down on glare and filtering out potentially harmful UV rays -  all without sacrificing high levels of natural light or blocking the view out during daylight hours.

The Window Film Company were contacted regarding a solution for excess heat and glare at a large premises in Birmingham. The property benefitted from a large number of windows, serving to provide excellent levels of natural light inside, while also affording a welcome view from the inside out. However, the large amount of glass meant that the internal temperature was often reaching uncomfortable levels, so a solution was sought.

High heat levels are common in buildings with large amounts of untreated glass, with the sun’s energy allowed to pass through the glass, steadily raising the internal temperature, often until it becomes uncomfortable. Traditional methods of combatting this can be either ineffective or expensive. For example, drawing blinds not only blocks the view and natural light, but as most blinds are set back from the glass, they still allow heat to pass through the glass and into the premises. Air conditioning is more effective in moderating temperature, but it is expensive to install and to run, while is also potentially damaging to the environment.

The window film chosen for this project was High Reflective Silver, a high-performance solar control window film that rejects up to 78% of excess heat, reduces glare by up to 79% and blocks up to 99% of potentially damaging UV rays. The film has a mirrored external appearance during daylight hours, and its this reflective property that serves to bounce away the sun’s energy before it can pass through the glass and into the premises. Once in place, the film allows for a view from the inside during daylight hours and delivers heat and glare reduction without sacrificing high levels of natural light.

High Reflective Solar control window film was installed throughout the building to over 100 windows, with the film expertly applied to the internal face of the glass by a team of The Window Film Company’s vastly experienced installation teams.
