HEAT AND GLARE REDUCTION IN WOLVERHAMPTON

Jun 30 2023

Premises with large expanses of glass can often experience uncomfortable levels of excess heat during warmer weather. An application of solar control window film from The Window Film Company can help manage these levels, helping to deliver a more comfortable internal temperature throughout hot spells.

The Window Film Company was contacted to provide a solution for a premises in Wolverhampton, where the extensive glazing was resulting in excess heat and uncomfortable glare. An effective solution was sought that would maintain the view out during daylight hours, and that wouldn’t reduce high levels of natural light.

Sometimes, blinds or curtains are used as a method for keeping the internal temperature down during warm weather. This method has two significant drawbacks. Firstly - it’s not effective! Curtains and blinds still let solar energy through the glass, while window film works by reflecting a percentage of it away before it can pass through the glass and add to the internal temperature. Secondly, shutting curtains or blinds will also sacrifice natural light and block the view from the inside out - something that is unsatisfactory during a beautiful bright day. Solar control window film from The Window Film Company will allow for a daytime view form the inside out, and the while the amount of natural light allowed through the glass will vary depending on the type of film, an application of solar control window film will not block high levels of natural light.

Heat reduction window film works by reflecting away a percentage of the sun’s solar energy, preventing it from passing through the glass and adding to the internal temperature. By cutting down on excess heat, the film prevents the temperature from rising so quickly, while also cutting gown on glare by filtering the harshest of the light.

This project saw two types of film applied to glazing throughout the premises. Due to access restrictions, an external grade film was applied to the outside face of four large panels, with powered access equipment utilised to reach the expanse of glazing. The film used for this part of the project was High Reflective Silver, which rejects up to 78% of solar energy while also reducing glare by up to 83.5%.

Elsewhere on the site, Optiview 05 window film was applied to 36 large windows over the first and second floor: with this film providing a solar energy rejection figure of up to 80% and a glare reduction figure of up to 91%. Both of the window films used in this project also block 99% of the sun’s UV rays - the biggest single contributing factor to fade damage.

The High Reflective Silver film was applied to the outside of the glass, with the Optiview 05 applied internally, with the entire job completed by a team of The Window Film Company’s expert installers.

Once in place, both films were effective immediately, providing relief from excess heat and glare while also delivering a stylish, contemporary reflective external appearance, without blocking the view from the inside out during daylight hours.
