Safety window film operates in a slightly different way; depending on the type of film chosen (it’s available in a range of thicknesses) it will make glass harder to break, but will also ensure that if glass breaks, it does so as safely as possible. It’s this type of window film that was applied to a stunning family home in North-West London.

The film chosen was 175 micron clear safety film. As the name suggests, the film is virtually undetectable to the eye, meaning that once in place, it delivers safety and security without altering the appearance of the glass. The 175 micron element of the name refers to the thickness – films are available in a range of thicknesses, depending on the location, situation and requirement.

Once in place the film serves to make glass harder to break, and if it does break, ensures that the pane is held together instead of breaking into smaller shards and falling away from the frame. This in turn makes unauthorised access or intrusion much harder, delivering a welcome level of additional security.

The film also makes glass safer. If a window was to break, the film keeps the broken pieces of glass together in the frame, instead of them falling in on themselves, potentially causing damage and posing a dangerous risk to those inside.
