LOWERING LOWRY HEAT LEVELS

The Window Film Company is helping the Lowry Hotel in Manchester to deliver the most comfortable possible experience for guests, by applying high performance solar control window film throughout the famous property.

The Lowry is an iconic building in the Salford area of Manchester, boasting 165 bedrooms and 12 luxury suites alongside a host of other five star facilities. The rooms feature large windows, offering either water or cityscape views, all contributing to an eye-catching external appearance and rooms that benefit from excellent views and excellent levels of natural light.

The large number of floor-to-ceiling glazing could cause issues however, especially on the South facing elevation. This side of the hotel is subject to large levels of sunlight, which during warmer weather can result in the temperature in the rooms rising quickly. In turn, this can result in extended use of air conditioning, or the drawing of curtains, negating the value of the windows by blocking the view and the daylight. The Window Film Company were approached to deliver a solution.

It was agreed that High reflective Silver was the most appropriate choice, with the film to be applied by teams of The Window Film Company’s fully qualified fitters to windows in 65 South facing rooms and suites. The Window Film Company’s Operations team liaised closely with the project team at the hotel, ensuring that it was possible to gain access to all the appropriate rooms across a number of visits, planning in advance which rooms would be filmed and when.

The film was applied to the internal face of the glazing and was effective immediately, providing a trio of benefits – heat reduction of up to 78%, glare reduction of up to 79% and the filtering out of up to 99% of the sun’s potentially harmful UV rays – the biggest single contributing factor in fade damage. This is achieved by the film taking on a reflective appearance during daylight hours, with this mirrored effect serving to bounce away a percentage of the sun’s solar energy before it can pass through the glass and raise the internal temperature. This is achieved without blocking the view from the inside out during daylight hours, or sacrificing high levels of natural light.

Once in place the film was effective immediately, providing high performance solar control and an appearance that fits perfectly with the aesthetics of the hotel.
