The incredible challenge involved trekking 100 miles across a frozen ancient lake in Mongolia, with the full distance covered in four days. Every aspect of the event was a challenge, including the arduous travel to the start point - over 4,300 miles from home.
Just reaching the start involved numerous flights and an entire day driving across thick ice and things didn’t get any easier from that point on. Each day required the competitors to cover around 25 miles, making their way over difficult and challenging terrain in extraordinarily cold temperatures.
In talking of the event, Micky explained:
“It was a very, very difficult week or so! The idea of the event is to take you completely out of your comfort zone and I can confirm that in that regard it was mission accomplished!
Walking on ice for anything approaching this amount of time is a completely alien experience. The footwear takes some getting used to, which when added to the other elements such as the freezing temperatures and the difficult sleeping conditions made this an incredibly demanding challenge.
Doing the trek for charity helped spur me on during the tough times, while often the sheer majesty of my surroundings would give me a much-needed boost. It was definitely tough going, but I did take the time to stop and appreciate where I was and what I was doing. I recognised I was experiencing something that not many people will get to do, and I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to take part in what was a once-in-a-lifetime event.
Lake Khövsgöl (the location of the trek) is an extraordinary place, in a beautiful country and I’m proud of what I achieved, but I wouldn’t be being honest if I said I wasn’t happy to be home and walking on a less slippery surface!”
The purpose of Micky’s Mongolian undertaking was to raise money for a brilliant charity; Children With Cancer UK an incredibly important organisation for whom funding is absolutely key. If you are in a position to donate to the cause, please do. You can do so safely and securely by clicking here.
