KEEPING COOL IN CAMBRIDGE

Aug 17 2018

The Window Film Company has been supplying and installing window film since 1998. In that time, solar control products have continued to be among the most popular, with premises up and down the country suffering from excess heat. This is usually caused when solar energy is allowed to pass unchecked through windows and glazing, with this installation in Cambridgeshire no exception.

The property in question was an extra care housing facility, a large property benefitting from a vast number of sizeable windows. The benefits of the glazing was clear, they delivered a stylish appearance from the exterior, while also allowing excellent levels of natural light to pass through and into the property. They also ensured that the residents enjoyed an uninterrupted view to the outside. Despite these considerable benefits, the windows were causing issues.

The size of the glazing meant that a large amount of solar energy was passing through the glass and steadily raising the internal temperature. This meant that cooling systems were required, with the alternative being the drawing of blinds or curtains; an ineffective way of reducing heat that also negated the benefits of such glazing – natural light and the view.

A solution was required that would deliver solar control while still maintaining the natural levels and a view to the exterior, with the additional consideration that the chosen product should be suitable for external application – the layout of the interior meaning that an internal fitting wasn’t possible.

The Window Film Company was able to recommend and subsequently install external grade High Reflective Silver. This high performance film works by reflecting away a sizeable percentage of solar energy before it can enter premises, helping create and maintain a moderate internal temperature. During daylight hours, the exterior face of the film has a sleek mirrored appearance, meaning the film is in keeping with the design of the building. The film also allows excellent levels of natural light to pass through the glass, while also allowing for a view to the exterior.

The film was fitted to the outside of the glass using powered access equipment to reach many of the 40 large panels, most of which were over three metres in height. The work was undertaken by a team of The Window Film Company’s vastly experienced and fully qualified installers, with the film effective immediately once in place.

The completed project delivered an aesthetically pleasing and highly effective solution, allowing those inside the premises to enjoy warmer weather without having to rely on cooling systems or drawing curtains and blinds.
