The property benefitted from a large number of windows, both at the front of the building and in the form of roof-lights. While these provided fantastic levels of natural light, they also allowed the sun’s energy to pass unchecked into the home, resulting in a steady build-up of heat. During warmer periods this can mean that rooms can quickly become uncomfortable.
After discussions with the homeowners, it was agreed that High Reflective Silver would be the best solution. A high performance solar control film, it works by reflecting away a percentage of solar energy before it can enter the room and prevents the steady increase the temperature. Externally, the film has a silver, mirrored effect, while internally the view to the outside is maintained.
As well as maintaining a moderate temperature, the film also delivers additional benefits. The tinted element of the film reduces glare, preventing the harshest of the light from passing through the glass and making day to day activity like watching TV and reading uncomfortable. By blocking 99% of the UV rays present in solar energy, the film will also help to slow down the fading process - protecting upholstery, furnishing and belongings from sun damage.
The film was applied to the internal face of the glass, with 51 individual panes treated with the film. For the roof-light, access issues meant that it wasn’t possible to undertake an internal application, so the exterior grade version of the film was used and applied to the outside of the glazing.
In both instances the visual result was a sleek, stylish look, in keeping with the aesthetics of the modern building, which was a contemporary warehouse conversion in East London. In terms of performance, the film was effective immediately, with up to 77% of solar energy rejected and a glare reduction of 81%.
