Students and staff at the school, a Stratford based Comprehensive, were experiencing uncomfortable levels of glare, caused by bright sunlight flooding through five large panes of glass. The windows formed the front of a stylish new double-storey extension to the premises, the sleek appearance of the glass providing a modern and professional appearance. The brief was to cut down the glare without affecting the aesthetics or sacrificing the view from the inside or too much natural light.
With an Account Manager assigned to the project and a full understanding of the requirement in place, The Window Film Company suggested High Reflective Silver as the appropriate solution. A high performance film, once installed it will reduce glare by up to 81%. In addition to instant relief from glare, this product also serves to block up to 99% of UV rays – the main contributing factor to fading. High Reflective Silver window film will also help to deliver a more moderate internal temperature during warmer times of the year.
The reflective appearance of the film was the perfect look for a modern building, with the glare reduction figures meeting the targets of the project managers at the school. In addition, the film met the other criteria of allowing vision from the inside out and not blocking too much natural light – reducing only the harshest of the sunshine. The film choice was made.
A second element of the project involved manifestation. This is a legal requirement for glazing of a certain size and is necessary under building regulations, essentially to make glass visible. This is particularly important in busy facilities and the school had decided to take this opportunity to update the existing manifestation. Whilst the markings must meet minimum criteria, the appearance of manifestation can take almost any form. The project managers had made a decision that the manifestation should take the form of the school logo and supplied The Window Film Company’s in-house print and design team with the appropriate artwork.
A popular choice for the creation of manifestation is Frostbrite frosted film; the acid etched/sandblasted appearance of the film delivering the necessary contrast between the glass and the marking. It was agreed that the manifestation would be cut from Frostbrite, the contemporary look of the film fitting in perfectly with the modern style of the building and the soon to be installed reflective window film.
Both parts of the job were prepared, computer cut and hand finished at The Window Film Company’s Buckinghamshire HQ before being installed. The work was carried out by one of our fully qualified and experienced teams, with the size of the panels requiring the use of a scaffold tower. The work was carried out carefully yet efficiently to ensure the minimum levels of disruption.
Once complete, the relief from glare was effective immediately, with the look of the film and the new manifestation serving to further improve the appearance of the glass.
