The Hammersmith based office benefits from floor to ceiling windows that afford fantastic views across London, but also result in the build up of excess heat. This is a common problem with large banks of windows; solar energy streams through the glass and into the property resulting in the steady build-up of heat. During warm periods of the year this can quickly result in premises being uncomfortable and unconducive to working.
Solar control window film works by providing a barrier to the solar energy, effectively reflecting away the heat before it has a chance to enter the building. This makes film a more effective solution than curtains and blinds, both of which allow the heat to enter the premises whilst also blocking natural light and the view.
The highest performing solar control films are reflective in their exterior appearance and once applied give the outside face of the glazing a stylish mirrored effect. Restrictions meant that in this instance, there was a limit to the amount the appearance of the glass could be changed, so The Window Film Company were charged with coming up with a solution.
The answer was to use two different types of film. For the top panes of glass, the ones that were more visible and subject to stringent appearance regulations, the decision was taken to install Light Reflective Silver. Whilst still delivering a reflective appearance, the aesthetic impact is far less whilst still delivering heat reduction of over 50%. On the lower panes, those that were less prominent and therefore not subject to the same tight restrictions, Medium Reflective Silver was chosen; a film that delivers up to 67% heat reduction with a mid-range reflective finish.
The installation was completed over a two day period, with approximately 140 windows comprising a total 40 square metres of glass filmed by one of The Window Film Company’s experienced installation teams. With the film installed, the benefits were realised immediately, the film serving to keep the internal temperature at an enjoyable and moderate level whilst maintaining the stunning views to the exterior, allowing for the passing of natural light and changing the exterior appearance by an acceptable level.
Once fitted, the film also began delivering a number of additional benefits; cutting down glare whilst also blocking the sun’s potentially harmful UV rays and helping to fight fading.
