WINDOW FILM TREATMENT FOR LONDON HOSPITAL

Jun 26 2015

Window film can be used for an increasing number of purposes, offering solutions ranging from the decorative to the functional. On occasion both ends of the spectrum can be incorporated in a single job, with an installation at Northwick Park Hospital providing such an example.

The Window Film Company was approached to meet two requirements; privacy and colour. Privacy was required to provide a visual barrier between sensitive areas of the hospital, providing a safe and more comfortable environment for both environment and staff. The addition of colour was required in a communal area of the facility, with the injection of colour designed to create a light, welcoming space.

To achieve the privacy element, High Reflective Silver window film was specified. The reflective nature of the film prevents day-time vision through glass, presenting those on the external side of the glass with a mirrored view. Internally, a view is still maintained to the outside, whilst a good level of natural light is allowed to pass through the glass, ensuring that privacy isn’t achieved at the cost of a pleasant internal environment.

This film type also brings additional benefits. The reflective nature of the film means that glare is dramatically reduced, cutting down on the potential for eye strain and other potential difficulties. After installation this product also helps to deliver a more moderate and stable temperature, the reflective element of the film serving to reflect away a percentage of solar energy before it is able to enter the property. By blocking up to 99% of the sun’s UV rays, the film will also help slow down the fading process.

In standard circumstances, an internal application of film is desirable as it tends to deliver a longer effective life for the product. At the hospital however, access to the internal face of the glass was impossible. This hurdle was overcome by using an external grade of the film, specially treated with an additional coating, the film provides the same level of privacy performance whilst standing up to the added rigours of being on the outside face of glass.

The Window Film Company’s range of rainbow films are the ideal choice for transforming the colour of glass without obstructing the view, and it was a number of films from this range that were selected for application to the communal area. Far more cost effective than expensive replacement glass, once installed the film immediately changes the colour of the glass, allowing light to continue to pass through the glass and creating a bright and interesting internal environment.

The film was to be applied to tall, thin panels of glass, with a range of different colours incorporated into the design. The height of the panels meant that a 3 metres access tower was required for the installation, which was carried out during the course of a day by one of The Window Film Company’s fully trained and vastly experienced fitting teams.

With the work complete, the privacy element was effective immediately, whilst the coloured film provided an aesthetically pleasing upgrade to one of the busiest parts of the hospital.
