A SOUND SOLUTION

Increasing amounts of work are going into the creation of new buildings, with every aspect of each build scrutinised to ensure that every element is as effective as possible. During the creation of a new leisure centre in Redcar, the acoustics of the main sports hall were identified as an issue that required attention.  The £31m build therefore included provision for the inclusion of specially constructed sound absorption panels, which were fitted at specific points throughout the hall. Sports halls are large spaces and sound often amplifies and echoes around them. The special panels reduce this and make for a more enjoyable aural environment.

The only issue with the panels was their appearance. They featured what appear to be a large number of uniform black dots, and this set them apart from the other panels and walls that made up the rest of the building. The design team wanted a uniform appearance throughout, so The Window Film Company were approached for a solution.

There were a total of 56 wall panels that needed to be altered to appear like the special sound absorption sections, with the suggestion being an application of optically clear film with a design printed on the surface be applied. The design would replicate the appearance of the absorption panels, so that once installed, the panels would all appear the same.

Arrangements were made for part of a sample panel to be sent to The Window Film Company. The design was printed onto the film and the film then applied to the panel, providing an exact example of how the finished product would look. This was sent back to the client for approval.

With the working proof approved, The Window Film Company’s graphics team began the print and preparation of each panel. To ensure complete uniformity throughout the hall, it was vital that each measurement was 100% exact, so attention detail was paramount. With each panel printed and cut, installation was carried out by one of The Window Film Company’s experienced fitting teams.

The film was to be fitted at around 7 metres from floor level, so access equipment was required. This and all the other logistics were organised in advance by The Window Film Company’s dedicated operations team. The installation took place and the result was an aesthetically pleasing, uniform appearance for the sports hall which would be used for basketball, five-a-side football, badminton and other indoor sports.
