SAFETY IN THE CITY

The City of London Corporation have a wide ranging remit that sees them tasked with looking after the City on behalf of all those that live there. The Corporation are based in a number of central London locations, and as is the case with other high profile premises, the glass is required to be of a  safety standard.

Window film is a highly effective way of meeting this requirement without the need for a time consuming and expensive programme of glass replacement, and The Window Film Company were approached to carry out the job.

Safety film is available in a range of thicknesses, each with a different level of performance. The fundamental premise is that in the event of breakage, the film serves to hold the broken glass together, preventing it from causing further damage or harm. Once installed, the film upgrades glass to meet the standard BS EN 12600.

Traditionally, safety film is a clear product but it can be printed upon or fitted as part of a dual film application to give the film a different, more interesting or aesthetically pleasing appearance.

In the case of The City of London offices, there was a desire to meet the necessary safety standard whilst also introducing an element of branding to the windows. This was achieved by fitting the film and then applying an additional layer of film in the form of cut graphics. The graphics were computer cut from Frostbrite frosted film, a product that when applied gives glazing the appearance of sandblasted or acid etched glass. Often used in the creation of glass manifestation, frosted film provides a clear and vivid contrast with the optically clear safety film.

Safety film can also be applied in conjunction with other films to deliver increased functionality such as solar control, privacy and anti-glare. It can also be applied alongside other coloured films to attain a decorative effect. At The City of London Corporation the end product was a combination of high performance safety combined with the stylish imagery of the instantly recognisable City of London logo,  illustrating that style doesn’t have to be sacrificed to attain safety.
