COMBATTING CAMBRIDGE HEAT AND GLARE

Sep 27 2024

The Window Film Company supply and install high quality window film for solar control, glare reduction and UV protection. All three of these benefits can be delivered with a single application of film, as demonstrated by this project; completed at a Cambridge University building.

The accommodation block in the heart of the world-famous City benefits from large windows, providing expansive views for the students and lecturers that call the building home. While the benefits of sizeable glazing are clear; excellent levels of natural light and an uninterrupted view, they can also mean issues – a common one being excess heat.

A common solution for when rooms overheat is to draw blinds or curtains, but doing so is ineffective and also negates the positive elements of windows by blocking light and the view. Window film provides an immediately effective solution while still allowing a daytime view from the inside and allowing excellent levels of light to pass through. The window film chosen on this occasion, Climate 35, reduces excess heat via its reflective external appearance, bouncing away solar energy before it can pass through the glass and add to the internal temperature.

As well as helping reduce unwanted heat levels, (this film will reject up to 68%) Climate 35 will also cut down on glare by up to 60% and will block up to 99% of potentially harmful UV rays – the single biggest contributing factor to fading.

The film was applied to windows throughout the accommodation, with the film applied to the internal face of the glass by a team of The Window Film Company’s fitters. Once in place, the film was effective immediately, with the film providing al three benefits without sacrificing high levels of natural light or the daytime view from the inside out.
