Heat can be a particularly acute issue when rooflights are involved; and this was the case at a facility in Berkshire. The premises had a large expanse of glass in the roof, covering over 16 square metres. The glazing allowed for excellent levels of natural light, but also resulted in the premises overheating and creating an uncomfortable working environment. The Window Film Company was approached for a solution.
There are a number of high performance solar control films available, with products available for both internal and external use. The location of the glass meant that on this occasion, an external application wasn’t possible so the focus was immediately on films designed for internal use only. It was a clear part of the brief that the solar control performance level should be as high as possible. The sheer number and size of glass panels set into the roof meant that large volumes of solar energy were streaming into the property unchecked, having a rapid and profound effect on the temperature. It was therefore that films with the highest standard of heat reduction were considered.
A number of samples were sent to the project managers, allowing them to see the films in situ, to experience how they look in different light levels and to assess the aesthetic impact. The decision was made to proceed with Optiview 05.
This film is the highest performing product in the range, rejecting up to 85% of solar energy, reducing glare by up to 94% and blocking up to 99% of potentially damaging UV rays. Optiview 05 also benefits from a reduced internal reflectivity, designed to be more neutral in appearance during the hours of darkness.
With the film type agreed, the logistics were handled by The Window Film Company’s dedicated Operations Team. This included organising the appropriate access equipment –the installation was to take place at over 5 metres from the ground, as well as organising a suitable time and date for the fitting to take place.
The installation was completed by one of The Window Film Company’s experienced teams, delivering a solar control solution that was effective immediately. The heat build-up was reduced as soon as the film was installed, ensuring a moderate and enjoyable temperature for those inside, all year round.
